Franklin first graders are reaching out to the homeless – abandoned or stray dogs and cats. Megan Lynch’s students collected food to help feed their furry friends who are waiting for a little love and a new home.

The class donated cat food to the Stark County Humane Society and dog food to Friends of the Pound, a volunteer group that works with the Stark dog warden’s department to help puppies and dogs get a second chance.

Suki, a rescue dog part basset hound and part llhasa apso, brought her owner, Margie Serri, to visit the students and explain about the care and feeding of canines. Most important, Serri told the students, is getting your dog licensed, followed by spaying/neutering, feeding and bathing, training and exercising.

Friends of the Pound features up to 40 dogs available for adoption. A special grant has reduced the adoption fee to just $34 for the time being, Serri said, and includes a rabies shot, spaying or neutering, first shots, a dog license and a kennel cough vaccination. The group tries to keep dogs alive “as long as they are adoptable,” she said.

The dogs can be seen at 1801 Mahoning Road in Canton, or on the groups’ Web site at www.starkdogs.org. In addition to the anxious faces of dogs up for adoption, the smiling mugs of those who have found a loving home are featured in “happy tails.”
